Mapping the actors and narratives of the Vrbětice case in the Czech and Slovak information space

The report’s primary objective is to thoroughly investigate the intricate disinformation landscape surrounding the Vrbětice case in Czechia and Slovakia, which emerged in response to revelations from a seven-year investigation linking the incident – explosion of ammunition depot to Russian operatives and the Skripal poisoning case in the UK. This disinformation aimed to create confusion and undermine trust in the official investigation. The collaborative effort also shed light on the interaction between pro-Kremlin disinformation spheres in both Czechia and Slovakia. The core analysis of this initiative involved using advanced software by Gerulata Technologies to map prevalent disinformation narratives in both countries, identifying significant sources of disinformation in their online landscapes. Comparative assessments highlighted distinct patterns of disinformation dissemination, despite shared characteristics between the two nations.

This report was prepared with support from the European Media and Information Fund managed by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.
