On September 11, 2024, the U.S. House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Europe convened a hearing titled “Countering Malign PRC Influence in Europe” to examine how China’s influence operations impact European nations and explore strategies for resilience. Among the expert witnesses was Dr. Dalibor Rohac, Senior Fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, who pointed to Czechia’s efforts to strengthen ties with Taiwan as part of broader democratic resilience initiatives.
Dr. Rohac specifically mentioned the establishment of the Czech Hub in Taiwan in 2023, launched during a visit by the Speaker of the Czech lower house, Markéta Pekarová Adamová, alongside a large business delegation. He described the Hub as a platform that facilitates collaboration between Czech and Taiwanese businesses and think tanks, while also noting that Czechia is the only European country to have established direct cooperation between its defense universities, police, and cyber agencies with their Taiwanese counterparts.
The Czech Hub in Taiwan has emerged as a significant initiative in bridging European and Indo-Pacific cooperation, which illustrates the power of partnerships rooted in shared values. By doing so, it has exemplified how smaller nations can strengthen their resilience and play a meaningful role in countering authoritarian influence on the global stage.
