Renewable energy and security in Europe

On 12 November 2024, the Prague Congress Centre hosted the BOLD FUTURE 2024 Conference on the sustainable future of the Czech Republic, where the European Values Centre for Security Policy collaborated on the panel “Renewable Energy and Security in Europe”.

The discussion focused on how to develop renewable energy sources while not deepening dependence on risky policy regimes in a situation where Europe is investing heavily in building renewable energy sources (RES), a key step towards a sustainable future and reducing dependence on fossil fuels. However, much of this investment ends up in the accounts of Chinese technology manufacturers, who are often linked to the Chinese government. This situation therefore raises questions about Europe’s energy security and self-sufficiency.

The discussion was moderated by Jakub Janda, Director of the European Values Centre, with an introductory video-entry by Colonel Otakar Foltýn, the Government Coordinator for Strategic Communications. The panel included Tomáš Krejčí, Deputy Director of the The National Cyber and Information Security Agency (NÚKIB), Petr Valdman, Director of the State Environmental Fund of the Czech Republic, Petr Klimek, Sales & Business Development Manager of SolarEdge and Jan Krčmář, Director of the Solar Association.
