The European Values Center for Security Policy (EVC) Taiwan Office recently delivered a presentation at 2026 APEC Voices of the Future (VOF) Youth Camp, examining Taiwan’s growing contribution to international discussions on supply chain and broader societal resilience. Drawing on EVC’s research and policy work, the presentation highlighted lessons Taiwan can offer democratic partners facing increasingly interconnected security challenges.
Moving beyond a narrow focus on logistics, the presentation explored the links between supply chains, maritime connectivity, energy and food security, critical infrastructure, digital networks, and societal preparedness. Case studies included the disruption of the Matsu undersea cables, Taiwan’s approach to maritime resilience, energy diversification, food security, and crisis simulations addressing the societal dimensions of contingency planning.
Together, these examples demonstrated that Taiwan’s international significance extends beyond its critical role in global supply chains. Its experience in areas ranging from critical infrastructure protection and maritime governance to crisis preparedness provides practical insights for strengthening resilience among democratic partners.
The presentation further underscored the value of connecting research with policy practice. By bringing together expertise from government, academia, industry, and civil society, think tanks can help identify vulnerabilities, facilitate cross-sector dialogue, and turn lessons from Taiwan and other partners into practical approaches to strengthening resilience.
