On September 29, 2025, EVC Taiwan Office Head Marcin Jerzewski spoke at the 25th Foreign Policy Conference of the Heinrich Böll Foundation in Berlin, Germany. In his intervention, Jerzewski focused on lessons from Taiwan’s resilience, which may serve as an inspiration for democracies in Europe. Specifically, he addressed how Taiwan seeks to realize the concept of “peace in freedom,” which holds that peace is sustainable only when rooted in pluralism, civic participation, and the protection of the vulnerable.

Marking Taiwan’s milestone of having lived longer in freedom than under martial law, Jerzewski highlighted Taiwan’s inclusive civic identity and ongoing debates over expanding Indigenous, LGBTQI+, and migrant rights. He also warned that China’s political warfare aims to erode civic participation, underscoring the need for democratic resilience and inclusive policies to safeguard peace.

“While Russia’s brutality in Ukraine reminds us that conventional warfare is not just a thing of the past, the authoritarian adversary will continue to seek as much influence over Taiwan as possible without firing a single bullet,” Jerzewski emphasized.
