At the Chung-Hwa Institution of Economic Research (CIER) and Research Institute of Economy, Trade, and Industry (RIETI) International Conference “Geoeconomic Challenges and Strategic Responses: Rethinking Trade, Industry, and Resilience” held in Taipei on November 18, EVC Taiwan Office Head Marcin Jerzewski presented on the EU’s evolving economic security policy and its implications for cooperation with the Indo-Pacific. He outlined the EU’s three-pillar approach of protect, promote, and partner, highlighting how reducing strategic dependencies and strengthening supply-chain resilience have become core priorities. A key focus was the EU’s Critical Raw Materials Act and 2030 benchmarks for extraction, processing, recycling, and diversification, as well as related strategic projects outside the EU. Jerzewski also introduced the Global Gateway initiative as a geoeconomic instrument for securing critical raw materials and setting ESG standards, with case studies from Kazakhstan and convergences with partners such as Japan, South Korea, Australia, Aotearoa New Zealand, and Taiwan.
The Chung-Hua Institution for Economic Research (CIER) is a leading Taiwan-based public policy think tank, established in 1981, that provides economic and industry-related research and policy recommendations to the government and international partners. The Research Institute of Economy, Trade and Industry (RIETI) is a Japanese policy think tank founded in 2001 that conducts theoretical and empirical research to inform evidence-based public policy on the economy, trade, and industry. Both think tanks are directly supervised by the respective countries’ economic ministries.
