On October 25-26, 2024, EVC Taiwan Office Head Marcin Jerzewski participated in the Digital Rights Program for CSOs Regional End-of-Program Meeting in Johor Bahru, Malaysia. Organized by our partner organization, Asia Centre, the event brought together leading experts and activists working on the issue of digital rights in nine countries in East, Southeast, and South Asia. Nearly 60 regional participants, including Malaysia and Singapore, attended and discussed key digital rights developments across Asia. It marked the culmination of a year-long project aimed at establishing a network of leading CSOs working on the issues facing digital rights in the Asia-Pacific region.
Jerzewski’s intervention focused on Taiwan’s efforts to close the digital divide, including the Council of Indigenous Peoples’ iTribe initiative and the work to safeguard the right to information in the digital sphere by promoting media literacy.
“Taiwan is pursuing an intersectional approach to safeguarding digital rights amid the exogenous challenges it faces in the information space,” said Jerzewski. “Initiatives such as the government’s recent Digital Era Media Literacy Education White Paper frame media literacy education as a life-long learning endeavor, addressing the issue of generational divides in the digital sphere. This can serve as a useful model for its partners in Asia.”
We look forward to continuing our cooperation with the Asia Centre and bridging the perspectives from Central Europe, Taiwan, and other countries in Asia to identify actionable solutions to our shared challenges.
