style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Characterized by colorful flags and marches, the month of June sees diversity and LGBTQ+ rights celebrated worldwide.<strong>In China, however, the Pride scene is rather bleak.<\/strong> According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lemonde.fr\/en\/international\/article\/2026\/06\/11\/chinese-authorities-pressure-beijing-s-institut-francais-to-halt-screenings-of-films-featuring-same-sex-relationships_6754326_4.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Le Monde<\/a>, Beijing\u2019s Institut Fran\u00e7ais, the French cultural center, was forced to cancel the screening of two French films featuring homosexual themes<strong> due to the constant harassment of Chinese authorities.<\/strong> From a phone call from police concerning the usage of the term \u201cPride Month\u201d to a demand that identities of the attendees be shared with the authorities, the response was a <strong>demonstration of how authoritarian states like China utilize their power to undermine universal human rights that are portrayed as \u201cforeign forces\u201d interfering with\u201cnational ideologies.\u201d<\/strong><\/p><h2 style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>What is the broader picture?<\/strong><\/h2><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The crackdown on the LGBTQ+ community in China has been ongoing since the 2020s, showcasing the Chinese government ability to stifles those voices it deems are representing \u201cforeign forces, \u201cas was the case with the Institut Fran\u00e7ais films. However,\u00a0<strong>domestic organizations face even greater pressure with the mobilization of local authorities.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regardless of these organizations\u2019 flexibility to navigate within the Chinese government\u2019s red lines by, for example, refraining from holding rallies and adopting a more subtle tone, they remain at the mercy of the authorities\u2019 arbitrary rules. This year marks the fifth consecutive year since the shutdown of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mailing.europeanvalues.cz\/link\/c\/YT0zMDQyMzMwMzU4NTEyMDkyMjIzJmM9ZzRyOSZlPTc2MDQ0OTk0JmI9MTU1MTUyMjkwNCZkPXA5ejJ2NWI=.9q79Jf1CDq7k8BBqdAPu-IIS1JIXe7REGQSinpqVpO4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ShanghaiPRIDE<\/a>, a Chinese LGBTQ+ nongovernmental organization that once held Pride gatherings and promoted Chinese queer experiences. The reason for the organization\u2019s prohibition remains undisclosed. \u201cMembers of ShanghaiPRIDE were under huge pressure,\u201d stated\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mailing.europeanvalues.cz\/link\/c\/YT0zMDQyMzMwMzU4NTEyMDkyMjIzJmM9ZzRyOSZlPTc2MDQ0OTk0JmI9MTU1MTUyMjkwNiZkPW43bDZ2NWk=.38Aklfytwurxg3R-6Pjv355UHwCEeK9DXbK3IbQlFog\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Raymond Phang<\/a>, one of the NGO\u2019s founders. \u201cIt became increasingly hard to execute as an organization.\u201d Similar developments came with other LGBTQ+ organizations, such as the Beijing LGBT Center.\u00a0<strong>Grassroots activists were discouraged due to detention and constant threats toward their family members and friends from police officials. Many activists even fled the country.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Another distinct tactic of the Chinese government is the manipulation of patriotic public opinion and the maneuvering of state-controlled media censorship. <\/strong>On Chinese social media platforms, such as Weibo (\u5fae\u535a) and Rednote (\u5c0f\u7d05\u66f8), netizens are no strangers to censored words, as the Chinese government uses censorship as a means of controlling narratives aligned with its interests and ideology. Controversy erupted in 2025, when<a href=\"https:\/\/mailing.europeanvalues.cz\/link\/c\/YT0zMDQyMzMwMzU4NTEyMDkyMjIzJmM9ZzRyOSZlPTc2MDQ0OTk0JmI9MTU1MTUyMjkwOCZkPXI3bjJ5Mng=.8fMCiHlqGHpjVsbFy5NsGM59NJWaPfzRFZMEt6ybaUA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0Voice of homosexual (\u540c\u5fd7\u4e4b\u8072)<\/a>, an LGBTQ+ advocacy account on Weibo, was accused of tarnishing\u00a0\u00a0China\u2019s Communist ideology through the use of the term t<em>ongzhi<\/em>\u00a0(\u540c\u5fd7), which means \u201ccomrade\u201d but is also the slang term for \u201chomosexual.\u201d Not only was the formal term for \u201chomosexual\u201d (\u540c\u6027\u6200) censored, but the account was\u00a0<strong>branded as a \u201cforeign force,\u201d and portrayed as actively undermining the Chinese Communist Party (CCP)\u2019s authority in conformity with \u201cWestern Values.\u201d\u00a0<\/strong>Moreover, research from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mailing.europeanvalues.cz\/link\/c\/YT0zMDQyMzMwMzU4NTEyMDkyMjIzJmM9ZzRyOSZlPTc2MDQ0OTk0JmI9MTU1MTUyMjkxMCZkPXg5eDF4MnA=.JSSffDDSyl06CMdSRRsq9YIrQ9nSxZLFO8kw-YnQ-mg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Chinese Rainbow Network<\/a>\u00a0shows that search results for \u201cPride Month\u201d remain censored across Chinese social media platforms such as Red Note (\u5c0f\u7d05\u66f8) and Douyin (\u6296\u97f3). Accounts from which celebrations of Pride Month were posted have been removed, and some users have even started to use the euphemism \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/mailing.europeanvalues.cz\/link\/c\/YT0zMDQyMzMwMzU4NTEyMDkyMjIzJmM9ZzRyOSZlPTc2MDQ0OTk0JmI9MTU1MTUyMjkxMiZkPWk5ZzByMWo=.w_EsO-EruruPh5V370GpCtZQk53ajSd6QvwT5SAHH0o\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Humble Month<\/a>\u201d as a way of dodging Chinese censorship.\u00a0<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is worth noting that while commercial establishments with LGBTQ+ themes remain hands-off,\u00a0<strong>activities and organizations connected to advocacy are being actively targeted.<\/strong>\u00a0Not only does this\u00a0<strong>asymmetrical approach create a seemingly inclusive facade that is \u201cpinkwashing\u201d China\u2019s reputation, but it also signals its drastic control over personal freedom and freedom of speech.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p><h2 style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Why does it matter?<\/strong><\/h2><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Pride celebrates the freedom to be; however, the dead silence around what should be a parade of inclusivity irrefutably highlights the Chinese government\u2019s denial of pluralism. <\/strong>This crackdown is an embodiment of the CCP\u2019s policy of \u201ctelling the Chinese story well(\u8b1b\u597d\u4e2d\u570b\u6545\u4e8b),\u201d a movement endorsed by Chinese President Xi Jinping (\u7fd2\u8fd1\u5e73), which, in essence, involves <strong>turning media into a state propaganda machine. <\/strong><\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The chilling effects of these maneuvers are limited neither to China\u2019s estimated 75 million LGBTQ+ individuals nor to the rest of its population; with the disruptive nature of AI and transnational repression, democratic societies are susceptible to attacks on freedom of expression and personal liberty. <strong>Extra caution is, thus, required, especially while China actively infiltrates major international organizations, while bluntly undermining universal human rights.<\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Photo: by Olimpia Kot Foto: vyfotila\u00a0Olimpia Kot What is happening?
