This behavior comes in response to recent negotiations between Tokyo and Manila on the <strong>delimitation of their exclusive economic zones<\/strong> (EEZs), a process promoted as another <a href=\"https:\/\/www.japantimes.co.jp\/news\/2026\/06\/08\/japan\/japan-philippines-maritime-talks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">step<\/a> toward strengthening relations between the two capitals. The proposed zones, however, also overlap with waters Taiwan declares a right to, while PRC simultaneously unlawfully claims them as its territory.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The following <strong>intensified activity from PRC vessels<\/strong> in the region can be interpreted both as an <strong>assertive territorial claim<\/strong> and as a warning to neighbors not to challenge Chinese territorial interests. Yet, this behavior has no legitimate legal basis and has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/asia-pacific\/2026\/06\/24\/us-uk-france-germany-raise-alarm-about-chinese-patrols-off-eastern-taiwan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">condemned<\/a> by the U.S. as well as United Kingdom, France, and Germany due to the<strong> threat to regional stability and freedom of navigation. <\/strong><\/p><h2>What is the broader picture?<\/h2><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since Beijing considers the Republic of China (ROC) part of its sovereign territory, it strongly criticized the announcement of official talks between Japan and the Philippines on the delimitation of the maritime boundary between Yonaguni Island and Mavulis Island, located in the waters east of Taiwan, arguing that without its own participation, such negotiations would be illegitimate. Nevertheless, this position has been called unreasonable by Japanese <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pna.gov.ph\/articles\/1276922\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">experts<\/a> on maritime law, as it is common practice for two states to delimit their maritime boundary before addressing overlapping claims involving a third party. Although Taipei initially also sought to participate in the negotiations, President Lai Ching-te (\u8cf4\u6e05\u5fb7) later <a href=\"https:\/\/www.taipeitimes.com\/News\/taiwan\/archives\/2026\/06\/19\/2003859363\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stated<\/a> that Taiwan&#8217;s rights in the relevant waters are protected, citing the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) as well as existing fisheries agreements with the two countries in question.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chinese denial is not only rhetorical. Since the beginning of June, China\u2019s Coast Guard (CCG) has intensified <a href=\"https:\/\/www.japantimes.co.jp\/news\/2026\/06\/01\/japan\/china-patrol-taiwan-japan-philippines\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>patrols<\/strong><\/a><strong> east of Taiwan<\/strong>, describing them as \u201c<strong>maritime traffic law enforcement<\/strong>.\u201d By June 24, it had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/asia-pacific\/2026\/06\/24\/us-uk-france-germany-raise-alarm-about-chinese-patrols-off-eastern-taiwan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">inspected<\/a> around 200 passing vessels, demonstratively <strong>asserting PRC jurisdiction over the area<\/strong>. Taipei described the behavior as \u201charassment\u201d of merchant ships and questioned the legitimacy of the Chinese presence.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Notably, two <strong>CCG ships also <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www3.nhk.or.jp\/nhkworld\/en\/news\/20260609_03\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>entered<\/strong><\/a><strong> the Japanese EEZ <\/strong>off Yonaguni island and remained there for over a day. While trespassing by Chinese government vessels is not unusual, this case included a notable nuance. When confronted by the Japanese Coast Guard, for the first time the CCG crews boldly <strong>claimed that the waters fall under Beijing\u2019s jurisdiction<\/strong>, significantly increasing bilateral tensions.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lastly, Beijing dispatched a <strong>maritime <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www3.nhk.or.jp\/nhkworld\/en\/news\/20260619_02\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>survey vessel<\/strong><\/a> to the waters in question, presenting the mission as a \u201cmarine environmental survey.\u201d Two CCG vessels escorted the expedition, which mapped undersea conditions, including marine chemistry and hydrometeorological patterns, officially labeled as efforts to protect the marine environment. However, at the heart of this supposedly noble cause there is a collection of <a href=\"https:\/\/understandingwar.org\/research\/china-taiwan\/china-taiwan-update-june-18-2026\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>data<\/strong><\/a><strong> that could support submarine operations<\/strong> and undersea detection capabilities. This is particularly significant for the PRC, as the area forms a strategic maritime chokepoint that would be highly <strong>relevant in any future blockade or military operation involving Taiwan<\/strong>.<\/p><h2>Why does it matter?<\/h2><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beijing is continuously intensifying its efforts to expand maritime control over the South China Sea and beyond, gradually <strong>normalizing the presence of its vessels<\/strong> in disputed waters. Its assertive activities within the Nine-Dash Line ignore international law, while attempts to resist are met with <a href=\"https:\/\/europeanvalues.cz\/en\/winning-without-fighting-chinas-trade-pressure-on-japan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">economic pressure<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/china\/china-sanctions-philippine-defence-secretary-over-erroneous-remarks-2026-06-11\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">targeted sanctions<\/a>.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aggressive Chinese policies have arguably strengthened the opposing bloc \u2013 one example being the development of the Japan\u2013Philippines relationship into a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mofa.go.jp\/s_sa\/sea2\/ph\/pageite_000001_00012.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Comprehensive Strategic Partnership<\/a>, which includes close military cooperation. In this game of chicken, however, it is important that the opposing states, including the European democracies, <strong>do not back down too soon and also strike back<\/strong>, for fear that China loses any remaining restraints on its expansionist behavior.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Photo: Canva.com Foto: Canva.com What is happening?
