Magyar\u2019s other key reform priorities center on domestic issues, such as <strong>establishing a new constitution<\/strong> that limits prime ministerial terms, setting up an <strong>anti-corruption authority<\/strong>, and <strong>restoring <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/hungary-whats-next-for-peter-magyar-after-election-win\/a-76785927\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>press independence<\/strong><\/a><strong>.<\/strong><\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/p><h2>What is the broader picture?<\/h2><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the past 16 years, Hungary has become <strong>the most pro-China EU member state<\/strong>, with collaboration spanning domains from trade, investment, and technology to security matters. In 2024, the two countries <a href=\"https:\/\/merics.org\/en\/report\/profiling-european-countries-resilience-towards-china-2025-update\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">signed<\/a> \u201cAll-Weather Comprehensive Strategic Partnership for the New Era\u201d which further strengthened their economic and political ties. In the Indo-Pacific region, the Orb\u00e1n government explicitly framed Hungary&#8217;s foreign policy orientation around &#8220;economic neutrality,&#8221; presenting <strong>Budapest as a bridge between East and West<\/strong>, rather than a participant in the region&#8217;s security architecture. Despite Orb\u00e1n\u2019s personal link to US President Donald Trump and his support for MAGA republicans, it was clear that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atlanticcouncil.org\/in-depth-research-reports\/report\/hungarys-policy-on-china-doing-beijings-bidding\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>China-Hungary<\/strong><\/a><strong> relations had continuously <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cepa.org\/article\/hungarys-orban-walks-us-china-tightrope\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>intensified<\/strong><\/a> throughout his tenure.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the end of the Orb\u00e1n era is <strong>unlikely to mark a breakneck shift in China-Hungary ties<\/strong>, as Magyar has not mapped out a radical policy reversal on Hungary\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/my-europe\/2026\/04\/14\/peter-magyar-walks-line-between-brussels-and-beijing-on-china-trade\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trade relationship<\/a> with China. Following Magyar\u2019s landslide victory, a Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson <a href=\"https:\/\/dailynewshungary.com\/china-congratulates-peter-magyar-cooperation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">expressed<\/a> Beijing\u2019s willingness to build on its relationship with the new Hungarian government, prioritizing reciprocal and mutually beneficial engagement. <strong>Hungary&#8217;s economic dependence<\/strong> on China is not something that can be unwound overnight. <a href=\"https:\/\/newlinesmag.com\/reportage\/chinas-massive-investment-in-hungary-is-lucrative-but-toxic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A case in point<\/a> is Hungary\u2019s position as the world\u2019s second-largest recipient of Chinese foreign direct investment in electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing between 2013 and 2024. This has contributed to a widening trade deficit with China, deepening Hungary&#8217;s economic dependence on Beijing. Tisza\u2019s foreign minister-designate, Anita Orb\u00e1n (no relation), signaled that <strong>economic ties with China are crucial<\/strong>, <strong>while at the same time emphasizing that Hungary should no longer act as an outlier within the EU,<\/strong>weakening European cohesion to the <a href=\"https:\/\/chinaobservers.eu\/orban-or-the-opposition-hungarys-election-and-the-future-of-its-china-taiwan-calculus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">benefit<\/a> of Moscow or Beijing. What remains clear is that, in contrast to the outgoing regime\u2019s confrontational posture toward Brussels, Magyar&#8217;s foreign policy orientation will align more closely with EU rules. In this regard, Budapest will likely exercise greater caution in how it navigates its ties with Beijing within EU forums.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/p><h2>Why does it matter?<\/h2><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The result of this election is important as it reflects broader strategic choices about Hungary\u2019s geopolitical orientation. Magyar&#8217;s victory matters for the unity of the EU, as it clearly demonstrates that there is still room for a center-right politics that is conservative without being illiberal, and pro-European without being politically impotent. As for Hungary\u2019s foreign relations, on the one hand, it is foreseeable that Magyar will adopt a pragmatic approach to maintain economic relations with China. On the other hand, Budapest needs to adapt new diplomatic maneuvers with Washington, which has now lost its most steadfast European ally. Ultimately, <strong>Hungary&#8217;s geopolitical position in the Indo-Pacific will hinge on how delicately the Magyar administration navigates the ever-tightening U.S.-China tightrope.<\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Photo: Unsplash.com Foto: Unsplash.com What is happening?
