Iran answered by targeting states allied with the U.S. in the Gulf. The arising conflict has and will continue to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allianz.com\/en\/economic_research\/insights\/publications\/specials_fmo\/260303_Middle_East.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">affect<\/a> <strong>energy markets<\/strong>, <strong>shipping costs<\/strong>, and <strong>financial conditions<\/strong>;the extent of this depends on how long the conflict lasts.\u00a0<\/p><p>In response, an emergency meeting was called by The Bank of Korea (BOK) on Sunday, during which a decision was taken to establish a 24-hour monitoring system. The South Korean stock market is currently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.koreatimes.co.kr\/economy\/20260303\/seoul-stocks-plunge-over-7-due-to-iran-war-oil-surge\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">experiencing<\/a> negative impacts. However, <strong>investor sentiment has<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.koreatimes.co.kr\/business\/companies\/20260303\/iran-conflict-fuels-surge-in-korean-defense-refinery-shipping-stocks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>lifted<\/strong><\/a><strong> in several key sectors.<\/strong> Korea\u2019s <strong>major defense companies<\/strong> have seen sharp gains in investment since the beginning of the conflict. <strong>Shipping<\/strong> <strong>firms<\/strong> also expect to experience <strong>higher revenues<\/strong> if Iran blocks the Strait of Hormuz as it has been threatening to do since that would cause an increase in freight rates.<\/p><h2>\u00a0<\/h2><h2>What is the broader picture?<\/h2><p>After the country\u2019s markets returned from a public holiday on March 3, the <strong>defense stocks saw huge gains<\/strong>. The shares of the country\u2019s largest defense manufacturer, Hanwha Aerospace, initially \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/03\/03\/south-korea-defense-stocks-soar-hanwha-aerospace-iran-us-israel-war.html?msockid=3ecb45f3e5ef6f130e035163e41e6e35\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">went up<\/a> nearly 25% before pulling back to 20%. Korea Aerospace Industries gained more than 12% before paring to 3.2%. Other manufacturers like Poongsan, an ammunition producer, or Hyundai Rotem, manufacturer of the K2 main battle tank, all saw steep <a href=\"https:\/\/invezz.com\/news\/2026\/03\/03\/south-korea-defense-stocks-surge-as-iran-war-lifts-demand\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rises<\/a> in their shares. As an <strong>important exporter of defense technology globally<\/strong>, South Korea\u2019s prominence has only increased since <strong>the onset of Russia\u2019s full scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022<\/strong>.<\/p><p>However, the apparent gains in defense and shipping do not offset <strong>broader<\/strong> <strong>vulnerabilities<\/strong> in Korea\u2019s economy, including <strong>energy<\/strong> <strong>dependence<\/strong> and <strong>market<\/strong> <strong>volatility<\/strong>. The country\u2019s stock market \u2014 the Korea Exchange \u2014 which had been the best-performing market globally this year, up to this point, suffered its \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.koreatimes.co.kr\/economy\/20260304\/seoul-stocks-suffer-steepest-fall-in-history-over-widening-iran-conflict\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">steepest<\/a> fall in history on Wednesday, with\u00a0 a daily loss of 12.06%. <strong>This was the most extreme decline among all East Asian countries<\/strong>. Even the biggest corporations like Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix and LG Electronics were hit by the losses.<\/p><p>As South Korea <strong>imports most of its energy<\/strong>, its key industries, including <strong>semiconductor<\/strong> and <strong>electronics manufacturing<\/strong>, are <strong>heavily dependent<\/strong> on <strong>foreign oil<\/strong> and <strong>gas<\/strong>, mostly imported from the Middle East. Supertankers carrying oil and gas go through the Strait of Hormuz, currently at risk of disruption by the war. Its <strong>economy is export-driven<\/strong>, which makes it is particularly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbctv18.com\/market\/kospi-south-korean-index-lower-circuit-trading-halt-key-factors-explained-19861832.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sensitive<\/a>\u00a0 to swings in oil prices and geopolitical shocks in the Middle East.\u00a0<\/p><p><strong><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p><h2>Why is it important?<\/h2><p>The situation in South Korea illustrates how dependent the global economy is on geopolitical stability. <strong>Modern wars create financial shockwaves that spread globally<\/strong>. The reaction of investors suggests that their confidence moves faster in response to real economic change, and uncertainty often precedes actual disruption.
