While it might be an auspicious year for bold projects and investments, it could also usher in chaos.<\/p><p>The annual celebrations in China involve a variety of traditions \u2013 handing out red envelopes, putting up decorations and inscriptions, setting off loud firecrackers, and family reunion dinners. The gaieties culminate in one shared ritual: watching <strong>Chunwan (<\/strong><strong>\u6625\u665a)<\/strong>, or the annual televised\u00a0<em>Spring Festival Gala<\/em>. The show is recorded in the Guinness World Records as the most-watched television program in the world and has undergone significant changes over the years. Beyond entertainment, it also offers a valuable albeit carefully curated window into domestic narrative management and the Chinese Communist Party\u2019s (CCP) thematic priorities.<\/p><h2>\u00a0<\/h2><h2>What is the broader picture?<\/h2><p>Produced by the China Media Group (CMG), Chunwan (\u6625\u665a) has been part of New Year celebrations in China and among overseas Chinese communities since 1983. <strong>The full-evening show <\/strong>features dances, musical performances by popular singers, traditional comedic sketches (<em>xiaopin<\/em>, \u5c0f\u54c1), and other forms of entertainment for all three generations of a Chinese family gathered in front of the TV.<\/p><p>As the gala\u2019s popularity grew, so did political oversight. For Chinese performers, participating in Chunwan remains <strong>highly prestigious<\/strong>. It also signifies regime approval and implicit endorsement. This year, <strong>international celebrities<\/strong> including Lionel Richie joined <strong>domestic stars<\/strong> such as Jackie Chan (\u6210\u9f99). Gen Z icons such as Jackson Yee (\u6613\u70ca\u5343\u73ba), a member of the TFBoys, actor and dancer Wang Yibo (\u738b\u4e00\u535a), and Chinese rapper Adam Fan (\u8303\u4e1e\u4e1e) reflected an effort to balance nostalgia with contemporary relevance for younger audiences.<\/p><p>This Year\u2019s leitmotif \u201c<strong>Galloping Steed, Onward Unstoppable\u201d<\/strong> (\u9a90\u9aa5\u9a70\u9a8b\u52bf\u4e0d\u53ef\u6321) highlighted the narrative importance of <strong>Chinese society and national development, particularly in terms of technology, while reinforcing national pride<\/strong>.<\/p><p>Viewers had access to an <strong>AI assistant<\/strong>, as the hosts repeatedly promoted ByteDance\u2019s chatbot Duobao throughout the evening. The show was, of course, rich in visual effects, but the most attention was drawn to <strong>humanoid robots from Unitree<\/strong>, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=PHGXOL3lcPo&amp;t=1425s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">demonstrated<\/a> kung-fu. Other robots performed alongside their human \u201ccolleagues\u201d in various acts: MagicLab robots in the dance performance \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=PHGXOL3lcPo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">We Are Made in China<\/a>\u201d (\u667a\u9020\u672a\u6765) and Noetix robots in a comedy sketch alongside live actors. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=gtM6YiOx8Wk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Compared<\/a> to last year\u2019s Chunwan performances, there was a noticeable improvement in the coordination and fluidity of the new humanoid robots \u2014 a subtle but deliberate showcase of domestic technological capability.<\/p><p>The gala also highlighted <strong>China\u2019s ethnic diversity<\/strong>: children performing in traditional costumes, touching nomadic songs, depictions of romanticized rural life, and notably, one of the hosts, Neghmet Abdulrakhman, representing the Uyghur ethnic group. <strong>Taiwan<\/strong> was represented through a music video and song titled \u201cWe Share the Same Roots, Welcome the Spring Festival with the Same Song\u201d (\u4e00\u8109\u540c\u6839 \u540c\u66f2\u8fce\u6625), which depicted both sides of the Taiwan Strait &#8211; New Taipei on one side and Zhangzhou in Fujian Province on the other &#8211; celebrating the Lunar New Year in parallel, with themes of reunion and gentle melancholy. Several prominent <strong>Hong Kong<\/strong> performers also participated, including the popular singer and actress Faye Wong (\u738b\u83f2).<\/p><h2>\u00a0<\/h2><h2>Why does it matter?<\/h2><p>This year\u2019s Chunwan blended the themes of <strong>technological modernization and national pride, symbolized by robots and AI<\/strong>. At the same time, it highlighted <strong>traditional culture and ethnic diversity, promoting national unity<\/strong>. The inclusion of international celebrities suggests a calibrated openness, signaling global cultural connectivity even amid geopolitical tensions. At the same time, the show\u2019s tightly managed narrative demonstrates how cultural production remains deeply embedded within state strategy.<\/p><p>The show is thus far more than a family entertainment staple. It is also a sophisticated tool of cultural communication and reflection on contemporary Chinese society.
