Bielakowska<\/strong>, Advocacy Manager of the Reporters Without Borders (RSF) Asia-Pacific Bureau, this roundtable brought together leading European human rights experts to examine how a widening \u201c<strong>human rights gap<\/strong>\u201d between the People\u2019s Republic of China and Taiwan is reshaping cross-Strait relations. Speakers explored how Beijing\u2019s <strong>legal warfare strategy<\/strong> against Taiwan\u2014including efforts to deepen legal and regulatory linkages under the banner of \u201cintegration\u201d\u2014risks <strong>exporting PRC norms<\/strong> and <strong>undermining rights protections<\/strong>. The discussion addressed intensifying challenges in the information space, including <strong>foreign information manipulation and interference <\/strong>(FIMI),<strong> assaults on journalists <\/strong>and<strong> media freedom <\/strong>in the PRC, including Hong Kong and Macau, and the <strong>precarious situation of Hong Kongers<\/strong> seeking safety and dignity abroad. Finally, the roundtable assessed <strong>Taiwan\u2019s legal and institutional constraints<\/strong> as it aspires to serve as an emerging regional human rights hub, highlighting opportunities for leadership alongside the practical and political obstacles that remain to be overcome.<\/div><div>\u00a0<\/div><div>\u201cIn the past 10 years, under Xi Jinping\u2019s rule, <strong>China<\/strong> has become an <strong>almost totalitarian state<\/strong>. Today, there is no space for criticism. Journalists who dare to report independently on Chinese Communist Party atrocities or corruption are <strong>detained<\/strong>, <strong>disappeared<\/strong>, or <strong>harassed<\/strong>. The regime currently detains 120 journalists, making China <strong>the world\u2019s largest jailer of journalists <\/strong>according to RSF statistics. At the same time, the country ranks 178th out of 180 in RSF\u2019s Press Freedom Index\u2014just ahead of North Korea. The<strong> great leap backwards for journalism<\/strong> in China is all the more alarming given that the regime\u2019s ambitions do not stop at its own borders.
