Russia has <a href=\"https:\/\/mainichi.jp\/english\/articles\/20251203\/p2g\/00m\/0in\/028000c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pledged<\/a> to cooperate with China to counter what they called a revival of \u201cJapanese militarism,\u201d while the <strong>boycott of all things Japanese <\/strong>is increasingly visible in both the Chinese market and cultural sphere.<\/p><p>Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump has shown <a href=\"https:\/\/mainichi.jp\/english\/articles\/20251204\/p2g\/00m\/0in\/011000c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">support<\/a> for like-minded partners in the region by advancing <strong>closer US\u2013Taiwan relations<\/strong>. In addition, an unexpected <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asahi.com\/ajw\/articles\/16198175\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">agreement<\/a> was reached between <strong>Japan and the Philippines<\/strong> involving the <strong>export of defense-command systems.<\/strong><\/p><h2>\u00a0<\/h2><h2>What is the broader picture?<\/h2><p>For more than a month, we have been following the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/china\/why-did-japan-pms-taiwan-remarks-cause-such-stir-2025-11-11\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>dispute<\/strong><\/a><strong> between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi<\/strong>, after the latter implicitly expressed <strong>Tokyo\u2019s readiness to provide potential military support for Taiwan in the event of a Chinese attack<\/strong>. Beijing responded with several measures, including intensified <strong>diplomatic pressure<\/strong> and the deployment of its <strong>coast guard <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/nov\/16\/china-sends-coast-guard-to-senkaku-islands-amid-row-with-japan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>vessels<\/strong><\/a><strong> to the disputed waters<\/strong> around the Senkaku Islands (also known as the Diaoyu and Diaoyutai by China and Taiwan respectively), creating great tension.<\/p><p>Instead of the anticipated de-escalation, the situation has triggered a chain reaction, with both sides, and their allies, responding in turn. Diplomatic and economic tensions continue to rise, as the two ideological blocs sharpen their boundaries.<\/p><p>China has received symbolic <strong>backing from the Kremlin<\/strong>, reflected in a Chinese Foreign Ministry <a href=\"https:\/\/www3.nhk.or.jp\/nhkworld\/en\/news\/20251203_07\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a> that both countries agreed to \u201cresolutely <strong>counter<\/strong> any attempts to revive <strong>fascism or Japanese militarism.<\/strong>\u201d This consensus on the \u201cJapanese question\u201d was reached during Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi\u2019s visit to Moscow and his meeting with Russian Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu.<\/p><p>Worth mentioning is a \u201ccreative\u201d step taken by the Chinese authorities in their <strong>anti-Japanese campaign<\/strong>: <a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2025\/12\/02\/china\/china-japan-diplomatic-row-culture-intl-hnk-dst\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">empty<\/a> concert halls. Approximately 30 <strong>concerts and cultural events<\/strong> featuring Japanese artists were <strong>forcibly cancelled<\/strong> across major Chinese cities. This <strong>cultural pressure<\/strong> accompanies broader declines in marine goods trade and <a href=\"https:\/\/www3.nhk.or.jp\/nhkworld\/en\/news\/20251127_B2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tourism<\/a>.<\/p><p>Meanwhile, <strong>Trump held <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/mainichi.jp\/english\/articles\/20251126\/p2g\/00m\/0in\/012000c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>calls<\/strong><\/a><strong> with both Xi and Takaichi<\/strong>, which all sides described as positive. However, the outcome was far from ideal for Beijing, as the US president went on to sign a bill aimed at <strong>deepening <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/mainichi.jp\/english\/articles\/20251204\/p2g\/00m\/0in\/011000c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>cooperation<\/strong><\/a><strong> between Washington and Taipei<\/strong>. The news was warmly welcomed in Taiwan, where the Presidential Office highlighted the shared democratic values of freedom upheld by both partners. This move amounts to a <strong>warning to Beijing<\/strong> and reflects Washington\u2019s broader strategy of curbing China\u2019s global influence.<\/p><p>The <strong>Philippines<\/strong> also played a role as a key ally of the liberal bloc, strengthening <strong>defense materiel cooperation with Japan,<\/strong> as both countries respond to <strong>China\u2019s expanding military presence<\/strong>. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asahi.com\/ajw\/articles\/16198175\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">defense-command system<\/a> in question, which falls within Japan\u2019s current export rules, would integrate with previously supplied Japanese radar units and support efforts to build a <strong>shared air defense network<\/strong>. Manila is also showing <strong>interest in Japan\u2019s Type-03 missile<\/strong>, which could become exportable once Tokyo lifts its existing restrictions next year.<\/p><h2>\u00a0<\/h2><h2>Why does it matter?<\/h2><p>We are currently witnessing a <strong>hardening of the geopolitical blocs<\/strong> in the Indo-Pacific, a region that drives much of the world\u2019s economic growth, supply-chain stability, and security dynamics.<\/p><p>Leaders of the liberal allied countries must balance between the <strong>need to maintain diplomatic and trade relations with China,<\/strong> while also <strong>demonstrating strength and resilience<\/strong> in response to Beijing\u2019s expansionist policies.<\/p><p>Japan\u2019s experience illustrates how China can leverage its dominant trade position and other states\u2019 dependencies, underscoring the need for<strong> effective de-risking for all countries<\/strong>, including members of the European Union and the bloc as a whole.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Photo: Unsplash Foto: Unsplash What is happening?
