On September 15, Wang Yi (\u738b\u6bc5) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.pl\/web\/diplomacy\/foreign-minister-radoslaw-sikorski-meets-head-of-chinese-diplomacy-wang-yi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">joined<\/a> his Polish counterpart Rados\u0142aw Sikorski to co-chair the fourth meeting of the Poland-China Intergovernmental Committee. The three-hour talks encompassed <strong>bilateral trade and investment<\/strong>, including <strong>agriculture<\/strong>, <strong>electromobility, logistics<\/strong>, Poland&#8217;s <strong>G20 bid<\/strong>, as well as <strong>global and regional geopolitical issues<\/strong>. Wang also met with Polish president Karol Nawrocki.<\/p><p>The visit took place amid Poland\u2019s growing <strong>national security concerns<\/strong>, significantly intensified by <strong>the Russian drone <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.pl\/web\/diplomacy\/joint-statement-by-48-countries-and-the-eu-delegation-ahead-of-an-emergency-security-council-meeting\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>incursion<\/strong><\/a><strong> into Poland,<\/strong> which had occurred just a few days earlier. As China <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nato.int\/cps\/en\/natohq\/official_texts_227678.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">serves<\/a> as a \u201c<strong>decisive enabler<\/strong>\u201d of Russia&#8217;s war against Ukraine, Sikorski raised the issue of Russian drones intruding into Polish airspace with Wang.<\/p><h2>\u00a0<\/h2><h2>What is the broader picture?<\/h2><p>Warsaw\u2019s <strong>China calculus is in flux<\/strong>. Under newly inaugurated President Karol Nawrocki, Warsaw might show a tilt toward \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/chinaobservers.eu\/pragmatism-without-principles-poland-china-relations-under-karol-nawrockis-presidency\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>pragmatism without principles<\/strong><\/a><strong>,<\/strong>\u201d a transactional China policy that prizes deals over values; yet the possible contours of such a move remain contested within Poland\u2019s governing camp. Consequently, Wang\u2019s visit comes at an important time of <strong>geopolitical reshuffling,<\/strong> which has had particularly dire consequences for Poland, a steadfast <a href=\"https:\/\/www.president.pl\/archives\/andrzej-duda\/news\/the-alliance-with-the-us-is-strong,93812\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>supporter<\/strong><\/a><strong> of strong transatlantic relations<\/strong> and <strong>one of the most <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ecfr.eu\/article\/home-and-away-why-poland-is-fighting-a-war-on-two-fronts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Kremlin-skeptical<\/strong><\/a><strong> countries in the EU<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p><p>That uncertainty collided with a sharper security climate. <strong>Days before Wang arrived<\/strong>, Russia <strong>sent drones into Polish airspace<\/strong>, marking an unprecedented challenge to the North Atlantic alliance that has forced NATO <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/aerospace-defense\/poland-downs-drones-its-airspace-becoming-first-nato-member-fire-during-war-2025-09-10\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">intercepts<\/a> and Article 4 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nato.int\/cps\/en\/natohq\/opinions_237559.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">consultations<\/a> in the region. Wang\u2019s visit was <strong>scheduled well in advance<\/strong>, so it would be hyperbolic to read it as a response to Moscow\u2019s belligerence. Still, the incidents undeniably raised the political temperature around any Warsaw\u2013Beijing engagement.<\/p><p>At China\u2019s <strong>80th WWII anniversary commemorations<\/strong>, the guest list\u2014Russia, North Korea, Iran, Belarus\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pism.pl\/publications\/beijing-showcases-key-relations-at-historic-military-parade\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">telegraphed<\/a> tighter ties within <strong>an emerging anti-West bloc<\/strong> and <strong>Beijing\u2019s ambition to reshape the international order<\/strong>. That context could narrow the space for meaningful expansion of Polish-Chinese ties while war rages next door in Ukraine.<\/p><p>A second test sits on Poland\u2019s eastern frontier. Warsaw has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.pl\/web\/mswia-en\/poland-has-closed-its-border-with-belarus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>closed<\/strong><\/a><strong> the border with Belarus<\/strong> amid the Russia-Belarus <strong>Zapad-2025<\/strong> drills, halting flows through a corridor that carries a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/poland-belarus-border-closure-eu-china-rail-trade-russia-zapad\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">substantial<\/a> share of <strong>China\u2013EU rail freight<\/strong>. The decision fits Poland\u2019s hard-security posture but instantly <strong>turns trade logistics into geostrategy<\/strong>\u2014and gives Beijing a practical grievance even as it courts Warsaw.<\/p><p>Yet China is unlikely to accept a choke point as fate. Shippers can <strong>re-route via the \u201cMiddle Corridor\u201d <\/strong>(Trans-Caspian links across Central Asia, the Caucasus, and T\u00fcrkiye) that<strong> bypasses Russia and Belarus<\/strong>. While costlier and capacity-constrained, the corridor has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atlanticcouncil.org\/content-series\/ac-turkey-defense-journal\/why-the-middle-corridor-matters-amid-a-geopolitical-resorting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">expanding<\/a> and is explicitly framed as <strong>a resilience hedge<\/strong> for Eurasian trade. Notably, its expansion is one of the key items on the <a href=\"https:\/\/global-gateway-forum.ec.europa.eu\/index_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">agenda<\/a> of the upcoming second <strong>Global Gateway Forum<\/strong>, highlighting its relevance to the EU itself. In practice, that means Poland\u2019s decision to keep its border with Belarus sealed cannot, by itself, throttle China\u2013Europe flows. Therefore, analysts emphasize that despite its decision to block the inflow of China-EU rail cargo through its border with Belarus, Poland has virtually no <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/J_Jakobowski\/status\/1967567970697134205\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">leverage<\/a> over China to <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/boguszmichal\/status\/1967325772471017766\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">(re)shape<\/a> its relations with Russia.<\/p><h2>\u00a0<\/h2><h2>Why does it matter?<\/h2><p>Notably, the assessment of possible practical results of the meeting between Wang and Sikorski and Nawrocki is complicated by the fact that both sides <strong>did not issue a joint statement <\/strong>following the talks. Yet, one dynamic is clear: While they discussed increasingly difficult dynamics in Poland-Russia relations amid the latter\u2019s full-scale war of aggression in Ukraine, they were<strong> talking past each other <\/strong>rather than <em>to<\/em> each other to seek consensus. Beijing appears likely to continue its approach of \u201c<strong>pro-Russian neutrality<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p><p>Meanwhile, the Polish government continues to maintain its arguably<strong> na\u00efve stance<\/strong> of <strong>courting China to support its cause<\/strong>. For example, foreign minister Sikorski expressed the view that, should Poland decide to reopen its border with Belarus, it will <strong>seek Beijing\u2019s help in curbing migration <\/strong>across that boundary. This is based on the claim that <strong>Russia instrumentalizes irregular population flows<\/strong> as a <strong>hybrid tactic of coercion<\/strong> towards Poland. Nevertheless, there are minimal signs that Warsaw has any meaningful leverage vis-\u00e0-vis Beijing, nor are there any indications that it would be in Beijing\u2019s strategic interest to align with an EU member state over Moscow and Minsk. While consistent with Poland\u2019s long-standing policy of <strong>light hedging<\/strong> amid great power competition, this approach of the current government ultimately<strong> weakens its potential <\/strong>to <a href=\"https:\/\/ecfr.eu\/publication\/multi-pole-arity-how-poland-can-help-europe-think-big-on-china\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lead<\/a> a more nuanced and principled EU-wide approach to Beijing amid critical security challenges in Europe.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Photo: Helen\u00f3w.
