In power almost continuously since 1955, it weathered scandals with relative ease, shielded by a fragmented opposition. Japan, for the most part, remained a so-called <strong>one-party democracy <\/strong>under its leadership. But that era may be ending. After <strong>losing majority<\/strong> in the<strong> House of Representatives<\/strong> (Japanese National Diet\u2019s lower chamber) last October, the LDP has now <strong>lost its majority<\/strong> in the <strong>House of Councilors<\/strong> (the upper chamber)\u2014marking the <strong>first time<\/strong> in its 70-year history that it lacks control of both chambers. And new challengers are on the rise!<\/p><h2>\u00a0<\/h2><h2>What is the broader picture?<\/h2><p>There are <strong>248 seats<\/strong> in the Upper House of the National Diet. Councilors are elected for <strong>six years<\/strong>, and every three years, <strong>121 seats<\/strong> are up for election. The LDP and its junior coalition partner <strong>Komeito<\/strong> needed to win <strong>50 seats<\/strong> to maintain their majority, but secured <strong>only 47<\/strong>. However, what drew attention after this election was not just who lost seats, but also who gained them, particularly in the case of the opposition party <strong>Sanseito<\/strong>.<\/p><p>Founded in 2020, Sanseito is <a href=\"https:\/\/english.kyodonews.net\/articles\/-\/55913\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a right-wing populist party<\/a> opposing <strong>immigration<\/strong>, <strong>COVID-19 measures<\/strong>, and <strong>Japan\u2019s postwar constitution<\/strong>. Its messaging\u2014nationalist, anti-globalist, and nostalgic\u2014resonates particularly with disaffected youth. The party\u2019s catchphrase, \u201c<strong>Japanese First,<\/strong>\u201d echoing Trump\u2019s rhetoric, appeals to those who feel alienated by Japan\u2019s pandemic policies, rising overtourism, and international aid priorities. In this election, Sanseito <strong>surged from two to fifteen seats<\/strong>, becoming the sixth-largest party in the chamber.<\/p><p>Sanseito is a movement party that finds its roots in the social media discourse of disenchanted youth. It began with <strong>pandemic fatigue<\/strong>, including the obligation to wear masks, but continues to this day due to the ongoing <strong>economic malaise, record-breaking numbers of inbound tourists, <\/strong>and Japan\u2019s continued support to foreign countries like <strong>Ukraine<\/strong>. All of this makes the party\u2019s supporters feel that foreigners receive better treatment than Japanese citizens and that the country&#8217;s culture is rapidly changing.<\/p><p>The Upper House election <a href=\"https:\/\/www3.nhk.or.jp\/nhkworld\/en\/news\/backstories\/4170\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">showed<\/a> that to many people, the LDP represents <strong>\u2018the old guard of Japanese politics\u2019<\/strong>, prompting young voters and those dissatisfied with the status quo to seek alternatives. About <strong>twice as many people<\/strong> in their teens to their 30s voted for Sanseito compared to those who chose the LDP, and also <strong>15 percent of unaffiliated voters<\/strong> supported Sanseito, compared to 12 percent who backed the LDP.<\/p><h2>\u00a0<\/h2><h2>Why does it matter?<\/h2><p><strong>Shigeru Ishiba<\/strong> was elected LDP leader last September to restore credibility after a major <a href=\"https:\/\/europeanvalues.cz\/en\/falling-stars-in-the-land-of-the-rising-sun\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">corruption scandal<\/a>. Framing himself as a reformist seeking to \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.voanews.com\/a\/japan-pm-calls-snap-election-to-create-a-new-japan-\/7815964.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>create a new Japan<\/strong><\/a>,\u201d he pledged to tackle <strong>inflation<\/strong>, <strong>low wages<\/strong>, and <strong>demographic decline<\/strong>. At that time 67 (now 68) years old, Ishiba was supposed to secure votes by representing a <a href=\"https:\/\/europeanvalues.cz\/en\/will-japan-feel-the-wind-of-change\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wind of change<\/a> within the LDP. Yet in under a year, the LDP has lost its dominant role in both houses. Sanseito\u2019s leader, <strong>Sohei Kamiya<\/strong> (47), <a href=\"https:\/\/www3.nhk.or.jp\/nhkworld\/en\/news\/backstories\/4164\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sees<\/a> an opening for a European-style coalition of small parties if his bloc continues to grow.<\/p><p>Despite the letdown in the Upper House election, Ishiba has <a href=\"https:\/\/www3.nhk.or.jp\/nhkworld\/en\/news\/20250722_02\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pledged<\/a> to stay in office and continue seeking consensus with opposition parties on a <strong>policy-by-policy basis<\/strong>. However, <a href=\"https:\/\/www3.nhk.or.jp\/nhkworld\/en\/news\/20250725_20\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">calls<\/a> are growing within the LDP, including its Youth Division, for <strong>Ishiba and other party executives to step down<\/strong>, or to at least <a href=\"https:\/\/www3.nhk.or.jp\/nhkworld\/en\/news\/20250725_10\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">convene<\/a> an official meeting to discuss his responsibility for the party&#8217;s defeat. Ishiba\u2019s opponents from last year\u2019s party presidential election are now also gaining more attention.<\/p><p>Ishiba wanted to create a new Japan, and it seems that one is indeed being created.
