Thirty-six senators jointly filed the case after her <strong>phone call<\/strong> with <strong>former Cambodian leader Hun Sen, <\/strong>in which she referred to him as \u201cuncle\u201d and criticized a Thai military commander over a recent border clash that left one Cambodian soldier dead.<\/p><p>The leaked call was widely condemned as undermining Thailand\u2019s sovereignty, sparking <strong>mass protests<\/strong> led by the newly formed United Front to Defend Thai Sovereignty at Bangkok\u2019s Victory Monument on June 28. Reflecting the public backlash, a NIDA <a href=\"https:\/\/nidapoll.nida.ac.th\/survey_detail?survey_id=759\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">poll<\/a> conducted between June 19 and 25 found Paetongtarn\u2019s <strong>approval rating had plunged<\/strong> from 30.9 percent to just 9.2 percent.<\/p><p>Despite the suspension, Paetongtarn remains in the cabinet as Minister of Culture, following the <a href=\"https:\/\/thailand.prd.go.th\/en\/content\/category\/detail\/id\/48\/iid\/402371#:~:text=Miss Linthiporn Varinwatchararoj as Deputy,Deputy Minister of Public Health.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-wplink-url-error=\"true\"><strong>new lineup<\/strong><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/ratchakitcha.soc.go.th\/documents\/76849.pdf?fbclid=IwY2xjawLQGmlleHRuA2FlbQIxMABicmlkETFOY1JtSHFQNWkzOXpYMTVhAR5DOKb4YTVK6ytqWmT_TXsFprKdj5-cR_xhgfkfB77ulbTYTiryHBry4mm-iA_aem_DXG6mjp2NZxhRg-vlnuG6Q\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">published in the Royal Gazette<\/a> on July 1. The role of Deputy Prime Minister was given to Phumtham Wechayachai, a fellow <strong>Pheu Thai Party<\/strong> (PTP) politician and former defense chief, who also now serves as Interior Minister. The cabinet reshuffle <strong>followed multiple resignations<\/strong>, including <a href=\"https:\/\/ratchakitcha.soc.go.th\/documents\/75361.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">those of eight ministers from the Bhumjaithai Party<\/a>, who cited the leaked call as affecting Thailand\u2019s sovereignty and national interests.<\/p><h2>\u00a0<\/h2><h2>What is the broader picture?<\/h2><p>Thailand has endured <strong>persistent democratic instability<\/strong> for over a decade, a turmoil that deepened after the 2023 general election. The progressive <strong>Move Forward Party<\/strong> (MFP) secured <strong>the most seats<\/strong> but was <strong>barred from forming a government<\/strong> by the military-appointed Senate. In 2024, the Constitutional Court <strong>disbanded the MFP<\/strong> for advocating reforms to the l\u00e8se-majest\u00e9 law, codified in <a href=\"https:\/\/library.siam-legal.com\/thai-law\/criminal-code-royal-family-sections-107-112\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Section 112 of the Criminal Code<\/a>. In the aftermath, the PTP\u2014a conservative-populist force ousted from power in 2014\u2014abandoned its alliance with the MFP and forged <strong>a new coalition with pro-military parties<\/strong>, installing Srettha Thavisin as Thailand\u2019s 30th Prime Minister in August 2023. However, Srettha\u2019s tenure was short-lived; he was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2024\/8\/14\/thai-court-orders-dismissal-of-prime-minister-srettha-thavisin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">removed<\/a> from office on August 14, 2024, after appointing a minister with a prior criminal conviction.<\/p><p>The House of Representatives then chose Paetongtarn Shinawatra\u2014daughter of exiled former leader Thaksin Shinawatra and niece of ousted Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra\u2014as Thailand\u2019s new premier, making her the third family member to hold the position. Even before taking office, Paetongtarn <strong>faced criticism<\/strong> over her family name, widely associated with corruption, and was accused of being a puppet for her father.<\/p><h2>\u00a0<\/h2><h2>Why does it matter?<\/h2><p>Paetongtarn\u2019s suspension has intensified uncertainty in a country that has seen near-annual changes in leadership, fueling <a href=\"https:\/\/nidapoll.nida.ac.th\/survey_detail?survey_id=761\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>public demands<\/strong><\/a> for either <strong>her resignation <\/strong>or <strong>fresh<\/strong> <strong>elections<\/strong>. This ongoing instability threatens investor confidence and <strong>risks further economic fallout<\/strong>, particularly as Thailand grapples with external pressures like U.S. tariffs and a fragile tourism-dependent economy. Many fear that another military intervention could <strong>plunge the country back into authoritarian rule<\/strong>.<\/p><p>There are also growing fears of <strong>another military coup<\/strong>, which could severely damage the already fragile tourism-dependent economy.
