The highlight was the launch of a new TV series, <em>The Guardian of Heritage<\/em> (Chinese title: \u7fd2\u8fd1\u5e73\u7684\u6587\u5316\u60c5\u7de3), produced by the China Media Group (CMG). The program portrays Chinese President Xi Jinping (as a protector of cultural and historical heritage and has been broadcast across more than <strong>30 Italian media outlets<\/strong>, including Alma TV, Donna TV, Lazio TV, Lombardia City TV, Roma Corona TV, Milan Pavia TV, and the website of <em>Milano Finanza<\/em>. CMG announced that more China-focused programming will follow.<\/p><h2>\u00a0<\/h2><h2>What is the broader picture?<\/h2><p><strong>Shaping China\u2019s image abroad<\/strong> has long been a core strategic priority for the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2021\/05\/11\/china-foreign-influence-spending\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">invests<\/a> heavily in international media campaigns. Italy has become a significant focus of these efforts, particularly since Xi Jinping\u2019s 2019 visit when the country joined the Belt and Road Initiative.<\/p><p>The new TV series is part of a broader narrative strategy, highlighting China\u2019s ancient civilization while <strong>legitimizing CCP rule<\/strong> by portraying Xi as a <strong>cultural steward<\/strong>. Shen Haixiong (\u614e\u6d77\u96c4), Deputy Director of the CCP\u2019s Central Propaganda Department and Chairman of CMG, <a href=\"https:\/\/italian.cri.cn\/2025\/06\/26\/ARTI1750900158114766\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stated<\/a> that the TV series will enable Italian audiences \u201eto experience the China of the new era and understand modern China through images.\u201c He also announced 2025 as the \u201cYear of Chinese TV\u201d in Italy, promising more China-themed content.<\/p><p>China\u2019s media influence in Italy has grown significantly since 2019. State broadcaster RAI and news agency ANSA signed memoranda of understanding with their Chinese counterparts, leading to systematic content-sharing with outlets such as Xinhua and CMG. Beyond official partnerships, Beijing\u2019s influence operations in Italy mirror global tactics: engaging local influencers, collaborating with the Chinese diaspora, leveraging social media platforms, and organizing sponsored press tours. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Italy experienced a surge of China-originated disinformation.<\/p><p>The term <strong>\u201cMarco Polos of the new era\u201d<\/strong> \uff08\u65b0\u6642\u4ee3\u7684\u99ac\u514b\u00b7\u6ce2\u7f85\uff09has emerged to describe influencers, students, and academics promoting positive narratives about China within Italy. However, China\u2019s inroads into Italian media are also facilitated by financial vulnerabilities in Italy\u2019s journalism sector. Journalist Giulia Pompili has <a href=\"https:\/\/chinamediaproject.org\/2025\/03\/17\/stop-saying-bad-things\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">highlighted<\/a> how economic pressures\u2014exacerbated since Silvio Berlusconi\u2019s transformation of media into \u201c<strong>infotainment<\/strong>\u201d\u2014have left many outlets and journalists more susceptible to foreign funding and influence.<\/p><h2>\u00a0<\/h2><h2>Why does it matter?<\/h2><p>As one of the EU\u2019s largest and most influential member states, <strong>Italy\u2019s public opinion shapes broader European perspectives on China.<\/strong> While Beijing continues to invest in propaganda efforts, <a href=\"https:\/\/sinofon.cz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/IT-poll-report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">skepticism<\/a> among Italians remains high due to concerns over China\u2019s human rights record, authoritarian governance, and environmental practices. Yet, China retains a mixed image as both a repressive regime and a significant economic and technological player. Notably, Chinese assistance during the COVID-19 pandemic generated some positive sentiment among parts of the Italian public.<\/p><p>Despite financial challenges, Italy\u2019s media remains relatively free and diverse, capable of offering <strong>critical perspectives on foreign influence<\/strong>.
