The <strong>China-Global Youth Influencer Exchange Program<\/strong> (\u4e2d\u570b-\u5168\u7403\u9752\u5e74\u5f71\u97ff\u8005\u4ea4\u6d41\u8a08\u5283) aims to bring young American influencers to China to show and have them share with their followers \u201cthe real China.\u201d An advertisement for the program was published in the China Youth Daily (\u4e2d\u570b\u9752\u5e74\u5831) and with other Chinese state-affiliated media platforms.<\/p><p>This move comes amid heightened U.S.\u2013China tensions: the ongoing trade war, the tightening of visa regulations for Chinese students, and growing suspicion on both sides.<\/p><h2>\u00a0<\/h2><h2>What is the broader picture?<\/h2><p>The requirements are straightforward: Participants should have at least 300,000 followers on TikTok, Instagram, YouTube or X, be American citizens, express love of China and Chinese culture and have no \u201chistory of bad behaviors.\u201d During the 10-day program, participants will visit the cities of Suzhou, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Handan and Beijing. They will be taken to Chinese technological centers, where they will visit the headquarters of the Chinese social media platform Xiaohongshu Technology co. (known as RedNote in English) and electric vehicle and battery manufacturer BYD co., and have the opportunity to livestream from the Great Wall.<\/p><p>Sounds cool, doesn\u2019t it?<\/p><p>China\u2019s <strong>strategy of using foreign influencers to \u201ctell China\u2019s story well\u201d<\/strong> (\u8b1b\u597d\u4e2d\u570b\u6545\u4e8b)\u2014a slogan introduced by Xi Jinping in 2013\u2014has been analyzed before, but its implications are still <strong>underestimated<\/strong>. There remain questions over the extent of the influence wielded by\u00a0<em>wanghong<\/em>\u00a0(\u7db2\u7d05, internet celebrities) wield, and why the Chinese government is so eager to bring in foreign influencers.<\/p><p>Stories of foreign influencers serving up Chinese propaganda have increasingly drawn scrutiny from Western media\u2014and from other influencers. Last year the story of Czech TikToker Jan \u201cHonzi\u201d Mich\u00e1lek, who participated in a paid trip to China and promoted Chinese government-linked influencers, made <a href=\"https:\/\/chinaobservers.eu\/tiktokers-trip-to-china-the-influencer-or-the-influenced\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">headlines<\/a>.<\/p><p>Mich\u00e1lek is far from an isolated case\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/chinaobservers.eu\/dancing-lions-chinas-influence-campaigns-target-influencers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">similar examples<\/a> have emerged in Poland, Greece, and elsewhere. Just this April, popular American YouTuber IShowSpeed, who has 47 million followers, <a href=\"https:\/\/chinadigitaltimes.net\/2025\/04\/tour-by-youtube-star-ishowspeed-hailed-as-soft-power-win-for-china\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">toured China<\/a>, documenting nearly every moment of his trip and becoming \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/radii.co\/article\/ishowspeeds-china-tour-soft-power\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">an accidental ambassador for Chinese soft power<\/a>\u201d.<\/p><p>In some cases, <strong>influencer naivety or ignorance of the Chinese political context<\/strong> has provoked backlash. In Czechia, this became a national conversation when another popular influencer, Martin Mikyska (aka Mik\u00fd\u0159), tricked Czech and Slovak influencers into accepting a fake partnership with a fictional Chinese company. His secretly recorded <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=0HJLKhhMJtE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">video<\/a> of staged meetings\u2014with actors posing as company representatives\u2014went viral and sparked controversy.<\/p><h2>\u00a0<\/h2><h2>Why does it matter?<\/h2><p>While China opens its doors to young foreigners and offers free trips to shape foreign perceptions, the US is heading in the opposite direction\u2014tightening visa rules and reducing educational opportunities for Chinese students. This is more than a diplomatic tit-for-tat. It\u2019s a <strong>missed opportunity and a strategic failure<\/strong>.<\/p><p><strong>China is investing heavily in shaping global narratives and expanding its soft power<\/strong>. Western democracies, meanwhile, remain largely passive\u2014not only in countering disinformation but also in proactive strategic communication and in offering attractive, value-driven alternatives.<\/p><p>Placing restrictions on Chinese students does not solve the real problem. On the contrary, it weakens Western influence and undermines long-term engagement. Europe, in particular, can and should do better.<\/p><p>That means investing in high-quality education, safeguarding academic institutions, and rejecting exclusionary or supremacist thinking.
