Despite the disaster, the <strong>military junta has <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/reliefweb.int\/report\/occupied-palestinian-territory\/atrocity-alert-no-433-israel-and-occupied-palestinian-territory-myanmar-burma-and-mali\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>continued<\/strong><\/a><strong> bombing<\/strong> regions of the country resisting its rule and is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-04-02\/myanmar-military-shoots-at-chinese-red-cross-rescue-workers\/105130294\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">accused<\/a> of<strong> blocking aid convoys<\/strong>. Myanmar\u2019s neighbors have also felt the catastrophic impact of the temblor. By April 3, Thailand had <a href=\"https:\/\/reliefweb.int\/report\/myanmar\/myanmar-thailand-77-m-earthquake-update-dg-echo-copernicus-emsr-aha-centre-media-echo-daily-flash-03-april-2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">confirmed<\/a> 20 fatalities. The most significant incident was the <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/thailand-quake-building-collapse-china-disaster-d0d55dc94a8cdc629c6c02b706296ae2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">collapse<\/a> of the <strong>State Audit Office building<\/strong> in Bangkok\u2019s Chatuchak District. The collapse of the building, which was under-construction, resulted in at least 10 deaths and nine injuries. The building \u2014 the only high-rise in Bangkok to have toppled \u2014 was the product of a joint venture between a local developer and <strong>China Railway No. 10 Engineering Group<\/strong>, a subsidiary of a <strong>Chinese state-owned enterprise<\/strong>, sparking <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bangkokpost.com\/thailand\/general\/2993737\/dsi-suspects-proxy-shareholdings-in-chinese-builder-of-collapsed-skyscraper\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">controversy<\/a> over alleged cost-cutting practices.<\/p><h2>\u00a0<\/h2><h2>What is the broader picture?<\/h2><p>In Myanmar, <strong>rescue efforts remain severely obstructed<\/strong> by a lack of equipment, limited communication networks, and damaged infrastructure. Even though the junta and international stakeholders dispatched rescue teams on the day of the earthquake, many of the hardest-hit areas remain inaccessible. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unocha.org\/news\/todays-top-news-myanmar-occupied-palestinian-territory-haiti-sudan-democratic-republic-congo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> that <strong>major<\/strong> <strong>highways<\/strong> connecting Myanmar\u2019s largest cities \u2014 Yangon, the capital Naypyidaw, and Mandalay \u2014 have <strong>cracked and warped<\/strong>, further disrupting transportation and relief efforts.<\/p><p>The international response to the Myanmar earthquake has been shaped by shifting <strong>geopolitical dynamics<\/strong>. <strong>China<\/strong>, a key backer of Myanmar\u2019s military junta, has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/asia-pacific\/with-us-absent-china-steps-earthquake-hit-myanmar-2025-04-02\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">taken the <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/asia-pacific\/with-us-absent-china-steps-earthquake-hit-myanmar-2025-04-02\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>lead<\/strong><\/a><strong> in aid efforts<\/strong>, pledging 100 million renminbi (approx. US$13.76 million) in supplies and sending over 600 rescue workers. <strong>Russia also provided assistance<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/mar\/31\/myanmar-earthquake-us-slow-to-act-as-other-countries-step-in\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dispatching<\/a> two planes with 160 personnel, including medical staff and K9 teams. Meanwhile, the <strong>United States<\/strong>, historically the top global humanitarian donor, has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/goats-and-soda\/2025\/04\/01\/g-s1-57335\/what-kind-of-support-is-the-u-s-offering-in-the-wake-of-the-myanmar-quake\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">contributed<\/a> a relatively <strong>modest<\/strong> US$2 million, reflecting both <strong>shifting foreign aid priorities<\/strong> and the recent <strong>dismantling of the US Agency for International Development<\/strong> (USAID), which has weakened Washington\u2019s ability to respond to crises.<\/p><p><strong>Taiwan<\/strong>, which has significant experience in humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HA\/DR), had <strong>a <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/focustaiwan.tw\/society\/202503310014\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>rescue team<\/strong><\/a><strong> on standby<\/strong>. However, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cna.com.tw\/news\/aipl\/202504020183.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reports<\/a> indicate that its <strong>assistance was rejected<\/strong>, likely due to <strong>Myanmar\u2019s close political ties with Beijing<\/strong>. The junta\u2019s decision underscores how disaster response in the region is often undermined by political considerations.<\/p><p>Complicating relief efforts further, Myanmar\u2019s <strong>junta has continued <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/reliefweb.int\/report\/myanmar\/myanmar-junta-continues-airstrikes-days-after-77-magnitude-earthquake-devastates-country\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>airstrikes<\/strong><\/a> in areas severely affected by the earthquake, such as <strong>Rakhine State where the Arakan Army is fighting for autonomy from the central government<\/strong>. While the military declared a temporary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/asia\/se-asia\/myanmar-junta-declares-quake-ceasefire-as-survivors-plead-for-aid\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ceasefire<\/a> on April 2, the ongoing conflict has hampered aid distribution, leaving many communities without sufficient support.<\/p><p>Beyond Myanmar, concerns about<strong> infrastructure safety<\/strong> have emerged in neighboring <strong>Thailand<\/strong>. Investigations are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bangkokpost.com\/thailand\/general\/2993737\/dsi-suspects-proxy-shareholdings-in-chinese-builder-of-collapsed-skyscraper\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">underway<\/a> into the<strong> China Railway No.10 Engineering Co<\/strong>. (CREC), the contractor responsible for the <strong>collapsed State Audit Office building.<\/strong> With CREC involved in numerous government projects across Thailand, the case raises broader questions about <strong>construction standards <\/strong>and <strong>foreign malign influence<\/strong> in Southeast Asia\u2019s infrastructure development.<\/p><h2>\u00a0<\/h2><h2>Why does it matter?<\/h2><p>Natural disasters like the Myanmar earthquake have <strong>devastating consequences on human lives,<\/strong> resulting in high death tolls and thousands left struggling to rebuild their lives. However, as this disaster has shown, responses to such catastrophic events are also shaped by<strong> geopolitical forces.<\/strong> The most visible aid efforts have come from authoritarian actors \u2014 China and Russia \u2014 while Western democracies have provided only limited support. The European Union was quick to respond and continues to offer technical assistance through programs such as the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.copernicus.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Copernicus<\/strong><\/a> Earth observation program, but its \u20ac2.5 million in emergency aid pales in comparison to China\u2019s pledges. Meanwhile, the <strong>dismantling of USAID <\/strong>and <strong>Trump\u2019s isolationist stance<\/strong> leave <strong>a void that authoritarian powers are eager to fill<\/strong>.<\/p><p>This dynamic strengthens Myanmar\u2019s military junta, which can rely not only on Beijing and Moscow but also on India for continued support. To counterbalance this, regional democracies \u2014especially <strong>Malaysia as the ASEAN Chair <\/strong>\u2014 must take a stronger stance, <strong>denounce the junta\u2019s disregard for the 5-point peace plan<\/strong> (even in the face of a disaster), and <strong>push for real accountability<\/strong>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Photo: Licensed from Shutterstock Foto: Licencov\u00e1no p\u0159es Shutterstock What is happening?
