The law, which requires TikTok to divest from its China-based owner, ByteDance, was then upheld by the Supreme Court. However, on his first day in office, President Donald Trump <strong>issued an executive order delaying the law&#8217;s enforcement by 75 days<\/strong>, signaling his intent to explore a negotiated solution with Beijing.<\/p><h2>\u00a0<\/h2><h2>What is the broader picture?<\/h2><p>During his first term, Trump championed the TikTok ban, citing national security concerns and data collection risks. Since then, his stance has shifted dramatically. While campaigning for re-election, Trump announced plans to &#8220;save TikTok&#8221; and used the platform extensively in his presidential campaign.<\/p><p>When the law took effect on January 19, TikTok went dark\u2014but only for a few hours. In the meantime, millions of U.S.-based TikTok users\u2014\u201cTikTok refugees\u201d\u2014 who wanted to express their dissatisfaction with the ban migrated to alternative platforms. Among them, <strong>RedNote<\/strong> (\u5c0f\u7ea2\u4e66; Xiaohongshu), a Chinese social media platform focused on fashion and lifestyle, <strong>emerged as a popular alternative choice<\/strong>. The app became a space for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whatsonweibo.com\/dear-li-hua-explaining-the-tiktok-xiaohongshu-honeymoon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">vibrant exchanges<\/a> between U.S. and Chinese users but also quickly <a href=\"https:\/\/wenhao.substack.com\/p\/american-tiktok-users-and-beijing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">exposed<\/a> some American users to the realities of Chinese-style censorship.<\/p><p>But then, less than 24 hours after going black, TikTok was back. TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew (\u5468\u53d7\u8d44), who attended Trump\u2019s inauguration, appeared in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@tiktok\/video\/7460937381265411370?is_from_webapp=1&amp;sender_device=pc&amp;web_id=7463424582395364906\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">video<\/a> on the platform, thanking President Trump <em>\u201cfor his commitment to work with us to find a solution that keeps TikTok available in the United States.\u201d <\/em>Chew went on to praise Trump for his fundamental understanding of TikTok.<\/p><p>The question of TikTok\u2019s future in the US remains open. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/tech\/social-media\/tiktok-potential-us-buyers-rcna188655\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Potential buyers<\/a> include Elon Musk, Canadian businessman Kevin O\u2019Leary (known as \u201cMr. Wonderful\u201d), billionaire Frank McCourt\u2019s Project Liberty, Oracle Chairman Larry Ellison, Youtuber Jimmy Donaldson (known as MrBeast), and other oligarchs. Musk, who has ties to the Trump administration and Chinese leaders, is considered a leading contender, fueling speculation about an ideological pivot in Trump\u2019s approach to China. This development has left some conservative members of the Senate\u2014who were tenaciously in favor of banning TikTok\u2014feeling sidelined. They are now <a href=\"https:\/\/www.semafor.com\/article\/01\/22\/2025\/trumps-tiktok-order-tests-republicans\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">calling<\/a> on Trump to clarify his goals for the ongoing negotiations.<\/p><h2>\u00a0<\/h2><h2>Why does it matter?<\/h2><p>The uncertainty surrounding Trump\u2019s TikTok strategy has raised broader questions about his second-term agenda. Many wonder <strong>whether &#8220;Trump 2.0&#8221; will adopt a softer stance on China<\/strong>. During his inauguration speech, Trump mentioned China only once, announced a reduction in proposed tariffs on Chinese goods, and unveiled a $500 billion AI infrastructure initiative.<\/p><p>TikTok\u2019s future in the U.S. remains complex, and <strong>more shifts and turns can be expected<\/strong>. Multiple stakeholders are interested, including the U.S. administration, the Chinese government, ByteDance, Elon Musk, and others, who often have divergent and unpredictable goals.<\/p><p>While the rest of the democratic world closely monitors U.S. developments, it should also independently <strong>assess<\/strong> its <strong>TikTok-related challenges<\/strong>.
