With <strong>presidential and parliamentary elections in several EU member states<\/strong> as well as in <strong>Australia<\/strong>, political leaders and experts alike seemed to be more than ever aware of the possibility of <strong>election interference through social media<\/strong>. One name is prevalent in this debate among others, and that is of American billionaire and government official-to-be <strong>Elon Musk<\/strong>.<\/p><h2>\u00a0<\/h2><h2>What is the broader picture?<\/h2><p>Musk\u2019s rise in political power came through his open support of Donald Trump in the 2024 US presidential elections, during which he became the largest donor in the election and afforded him considerable influence over the public. For example, in October 2024, he announced to his 211.6 million followers on X, the social media platform that he controls, that he would be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/ced0d1g5zyno\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">giving out 1 million USD<\/a> until the election results to Republican voters. Following his November victory, Trump announced that <strong>Musk<\/strong>, lacking experience in politics, <strong>would co-lead his new <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c93qwn8p0l0o\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>&#8220;Department of Government Efficiency&#8221;<\/strong><\/a><strong>. <\/strong><\/p><p>Now, Musk is turning his eye towards Europe. In his recent posts, <strong>Musk promoted<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/german-election-why-elon-musk-is-promoting-the-far-right-afd\/a-71186763\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>far-right ideas<\/strong><\/a><strong>, <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/eu.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/investigations\/2024\/08\/15\/riots-uk-racist-tweet-us-effect\/74812814007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>spread disinformation<\/strong><\/a>, and criticized European and Canadian leaders. His actions varied from <strong>personal posts, insults, and public surveys<\/strong> to <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/germany-elon-musk-afd-alice-weidel-521a8fb77250ee0f354fa4e76c1ce63d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>hosting livestreams with German far-right politicians<\/strong><\/a> and have been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/my-europe\/2025\/01\/08\/elon-musks-interference-in-national-debates-angers-europes-leaders\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">condemned by<\/a> the French president, the German chancellor, and the British and Spanish prime ministers.<\/p><p>On Monday, January 6<sup>th<\/sup>, European Union leaders and lawmakers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/elon-musk-interference-alice-weidel-x-livestream-afd-germany-eu-digital-services-act\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">urged Brussels<\/a> to <strong>fight this influence through legal action. <\/strong>According to the European Commission, it is possible Musk <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/elon-musk-interference-alice-weidel-x-livestream-afd-germany-eu-digital-services-act\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">could be prosecuted<\/a> based on the EU\u2019s new digital rulebook.<\/p><p>However, Musk is not the only power currently influencing European politics. On December 6<sup>th,<\/sup> 2024, the <strong>Romanian Constitutional Court <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.journalofdemocracy.org\/online-exclusive\/why-romania-just-canceled-its-presidential-election\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>canceled<\/strong><\/a><strong> the country\u2019s presidential elections<\/strong> just two days before the final round of voting, <strong>citing Kremlin\u2019s interference<\/strong> and <a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2024\/12\/17\/tech\/eu-tiktok-investigation-romanian-election-intl\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">political advertisements<\/a> spread over TikTok. The election is planned to be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/romania-rerun-presidential-election-may-4-ruling-coalition-party-says-2025-01-08\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rerun in May<\/a> 2025.<\/p><h2>\u00a0<\/h2><h2>Why does it matter?<\/h2><p>It is to be expected that the EU\u2019s pushback against foreign interference will be based on the 2022 Digital Services Act (DSA), just like last July, the European Union found that <strong>X had <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/elon-musks-x-platform-in-breach-of-eu-rules\/a-69642525\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>violated multiple tenets<\/strong><\/a><strong> of the DSA.<\/strong> Unfortunately, one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/elon-musk-interference-alice-weidel-x-livestream-afd-germany-eu-digital-services-act\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">criteria<\/a> for legal action is going to be the extent to which <strong>Musk\u2019s livestream with AfD\u2019s Alice Weidel<\/strong> will be deemed to boost AfD\u2019s preferences. With the Federal elections in Germany being held on 23 February, <strong>the window for implementation of any countermeasures<\/strong> to stop the interference in one of Europe\u2019s most crucial elections <strong>is very small.<\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What is happening?
