In related news, several high-ranking figures in politics and media recently received the chief editor of the disinformation channel ZEM &amp; VEK, Tibor Rost\u00e1s, in China. Rost\u00e1s claimed his visit had received \u201cgreat support\u201d from Fico. \u00a0<\/p><h2>\u00a0<\/h2><h2>What is the broader picture?<\/h2><p>In the wake of Fico\u2019s attempted assassination, the CCP-owned news outlet <em>Global Times<\/em> ran two articles framing the attack in the context of the War in Ukraine. The outlet quoted a Chinese \u201cexpert\u201d who alleged that the assassination \u201cmight be related to Fico\u2019s pro-Russian stance, or more accurately, his neutral position in the Russia-Ukraine conflict.\u201d Suppose this account turns out to be accurate. In that case, it means \u201cunconventional methods are being used\u201d in the conflict, <strong>implying that Ukraine or the West may somehow be involved in plotting the assassination.<\/strong><\/p><p><strong>The link between the attempted assassination and the War in Ukraine is tenuous at best. <\/strong>As Slovak media <a href=\"https:\/\/domov.sme.sk\/c\/23331389\/robert-fico-atentat-konspirace-dnes.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">point out<\/a>, Fico\u2019s government did not stop the commercial shipment of arms to Ukraine. Furthermore, it appears the assassin Juraj Cintula only <a href=\"https:\/\/www.novinky.cz\/clanek\/zahranicni-atentatnik-se-k-cinu-rozhodl-hned-po-prezidentskych-volbach-rekl-ministr-40471949\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">decided<\/a> to attack Fico after the election of Peter Pellegrini. This would lend credence to the <strong>theory that Cintula was <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/article\/2024\/may\/16\/not-radical-slovakia-make-sense-attack-fico\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>motivated<\/strong><\/a><strong> by the government\u2019s \u201cliquidation\u201d of the Radio and Television of Slovakia (RTVS),<\/strong> which the assassin had recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.idnes.cz\/zpravy\/zahranicni\/kdo-je-podezrely-z-utoku-na-fica.A240515_174033_zahranicni_jan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">decried<\/a> on social media.<\/p><p>At the same time as these articles made their rounds, <strong>Slovak far-right media figure Tibor Rost\u00e1s was <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MatejSimalcik\/status\/1791860601293095413\/photo\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>visiting<\/strong><\/a><strong> Beijing. <\/strong>Rost\u00e1s was previously <a href=\"https:\/\/spravy.pravda.sk\/domace\/clanok\/605081-rostas-spozna-svoj-trest-za-hanobenie-rasy-a-naroda\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fined<\/a> 4000 euros for publishing\u00a0 an antisemitic article urging Slavic unity, which the highest court in Slovakia considered racially and nationally <a href=\"https:\/\/www.idnes.cz\/zpravy\/zahranicni\/slovensko-soud-sefredaktor-extremismus-tibor-rostas.A191216_161018_zahranicni_chtl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">defamatory<\/a>. According to Rost\u00e1s\u2019s media posts, he met with Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin (\u6c6a\u6587\u658c) and vice-president of the All-China Journalists Association Liu Siyang (\u5289\u601d\u63da). The subject of the latter conversation was the <strong>planned creation of a large media group, which would see the participation of Russian outlets. <\/strong><\/p><h2>\u00a0<\/h2><h2>Why does it matter?<\/h2><p>Views differ about what role the<em> Global Times<\/em> fulfills in the Chinese media landscape. While some <a href=\"https:\/\/foreignpolicy.com\/2017\/04\/28\/chinas-angriest-newspaper-doesnt-speak-for-china\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">argue<\/a> that the <em>Global Times<\/em> does not speak for the Chinese government, others <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/china\/china-s-global-times-hawkish-decree-or-reflecting-readers-n722316\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">allege<\/a> it says what China\u2019s leadership thinks out loud. Its Chinese-language incarnation Huanqiu runs different articles and is less belligerent in tone, implying that the<em> <strong>Global Times<\/strong><\/em><strong> aims to stir discontent in foreign countries, <\/strong>including Slovakia, by feeding conspiracy theories.<\/p><p>The potential for cooperation between the Slovak disinformation scene and Chinese media is a new development.<strong> In the past, numerous Chinese and Russian outlets have signed cooperation agreements, <\/strong>sharing each other\u2019s official narratives. <strong>Closer collaboration between China and Slovakia\u2019s far-right media scene may see disinformation flow in both directions between the two countries. \u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What is happening?
