Kremlin media and Brexit<\/strong><\/p>\n

Digital agency 89up has presented a report of its\u00a0research<\/a>\u00a0into the influence of Kremlin media and automated bots during the Brexit referendum. According to the report, the Kremlin\u2019s mouthpieces, RT and Sputnik, produced anti-EU content on Twitter that had greater reach than the Vote Leave or Leave.EU campaigns. The influence of Russian bots was extensive as well. Their reach, according to 89up, was equivalent to 29% of the total reach of both the above-mentioned pro-Brexit campaigns on Twitter.<\/p>\n

Pro-Kremlin British Twitter accounts are active even now, after Brexit has been decided. According J. J. Patrick and his article on\u00a0ByLine<\/a>, the Twitter campaign #Moggmentum, supporting British MP Jacob Ree-Mogg, has been widely pushed by accounts linked to disinformation operations.<\/p>\n

Euromaidan Press<\/a>\u00a0reminds its readers that not all Russian media have always been tools of the Kremlin\u2019s propaganda machine, highlighting that RIA Novosti used to be internationally respected for unbiased and quality reporting. In recent days, there have been mentions in several mainstream media outlets that, at the beginning of February,\u00a0up to 200 Russian mercenaries were killed by US airstrikes in Syria<\/strong>. Russian authorities have\u00a0dismissed<\/a>\u00a0these reports as \u201cclassic disinformation\u201d according to an anonymous source from the Russian Foreign Ministry quoted by Interfax.<\/p>\n

US Developments<\/h1>\n

Robert Mueller indicts 13 Russians and three Russian entities for meddling in the US election to help Trump<\/strong><\/p>\n

Last Friday, the office of Robert Mueller\u00a0announced<\/a>\u00a0that 13 Russians and three additional Russian entities, including the infamous St Petersburg \u2018troll factory\u2019, have been criminally charged for interfering in the 2016 presidential election in favor of Donald Trump. The\u00a0indictment<\/a>\u00a0by a federal grand jury in Washington DC alleged that the Russian operatives\u2019 activities \u201cincluded supporting the presidential campaign of then-candidate Donald J Trump […] and disparaging Hillary Clinton\u201d and furthermore \u201ccommunicated with unwitting individuals associated with the Trump campaign\u201d.\u00a0The Guardian\u00a0<\/em>reports<\/a>\u00a0that \u201cthe Russians allegedly posed as Americans to operate bogus social media accounts, buy advertisements and stage political rallies. They stole the identities of real people in the US to post online and built computer systems in the US to hide the Russian origin of their activity.\u201d (Read the article for a full account of the revelations \u2013 they are extensive!)<\/p>\n

However, the indictment does not address either the question of collusion by any member(s) of the Trump campaign or whether the Russians\u2019 efforts succeeding in influencing the outcome of the election. Predictably, the White House and Trump himself\u00a0twisted<\/a>\u00a0this position to proclaim \u2013 falsely \u2013 that the indictment\u00a0proved<\/em>\u00a0that no collusion had occurred and that Russian meddling had no impact whatsoever on the election outcome.<\/p>\n

And what of the Kremlin\u2019s reaction? Maria Zakharova, spokeswoman for the Russian MFA, called the allegations \u201cabsurd\u201d and wrote on Facebook: \u201cThirteen people carried out interference in the US elections? Thirteen people against special services with a budgets [sic] of billions?\u201d Classic deflection and obfuscation \u2013 we wouldn\u2019t expect any less from the Kremlin\u2019s faithful cronies!<\/p>\n

\n

US and UK blame Russia for \u2018NotPetya\u2019 cyberattack<\/strong><\/p>\n

The US and Britain have\u00a0announced<\/a>\u00a0that the Russian military is responsible for the malicious ransomware attack known as \u2018NotPetya\u2019, which originated in Ukraine in 2017 and subsequently spread across Europe, Asia, and the Americas, causing billions of dollars\u2019 worth of damage. In a statement, the White House\u00a0added<\/a>\u00a0that NotPetya \u201cwas part of the Kremlin\u2019s ongoing effort to destabilize Ukraine and demonstrates ever more clearly Russia\u2019s involvement in the ongoing conflict. This was also a reckless and indiscriminate cyber-attack that will be met with international consequences.\u201d<\/p>\n

Again, what did the Kremlin say? In another favored tactic \u2013 playing the victim \u2013 Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov called the accusations \u201ca continuation of the Russophobic campaign\u201d.<\/p>\n

\n

Kremlin trolls capitalize on an American tragedy<\/strong><\/p>\n

In their efforts to destabilize American democracy, the Kremlin\u2019s trolls and bots have seized on yet another opportunity to exacerbate partisan divisions. As the news unfolded of yet another school shooting \u2013 this time in Florida, with 17 dead \u2013 hundreds of Twitter accounts thought to be under Russian control\u00a0jumped on the bandwagon<\/a>, tweeting hyperpartisan messages about gun control. The findings, which derive from the\u00a0Hamilton 68<\/a>\u00a0dashboard, a site that tracks Russian influence efforts on Twitter, reveal that the accounts in question had previously been tweeting about Ukraine and Syria, where Russia is seeking to gain influence. While these accounts suddenly switched their focus to gun reform, using hashtags such as #guncontrol, #guncontrolnow, and #gunreformnow, plenty of other Kremlin-linked accounts tracked by the dashboard espouse extreme pro-gun rhetoric.<\/p>\n

The Kremlin\u2019s Current Narrative<\/h2>\n

\n

\n

They aren\u2019t ours<\/strong><\/p>\n

Russia has mastered the technique of truth denial, especially when it comes to covering up its military operations. Putin\u2019s famous statement, \u201cIch tam net (they aren\u2019t there)\u201d, about the involvement of Russian military forces in the Crimea takeover is a popular neologism that accurately summarizes most of Russia\u2019s hybrid operations abroad. A similar card is now being played by Maria Zakharova, who couldn\u2019t help commenting on the recent\u00a0killing of Russian mercenaries in Syria<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Zakharova claimed<\/a>\u00a0that the interest of the foreign press in this matter is a result of an American information attack on Russia: \u201cNotably, this information attack is coming from the United States, which has been accusing Russia for months on end of interfering in its internal affairs, in particular, the presidential election campaign, including in rather amusing ways, such as in social media\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n

According to Zakharova, neither she nor the Russian MFA know the details of the clash in which only five \u201cpresumably Russian citizens\u201d\u00a0<\/em>died. She also has a piece of advice to America: \u201cMind your own business instead of spreading disinformation about Russia\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n

Weird Petya<\/strong><\/p>\n

Russian Vzglyad<\/a>\u00a0couldn\u2019t miss the opportunity chance to comment on statements published by the USA, Canada, and the UK claiming that Russia is responsible for the malicious \u2018NotPetya\u2019 cyberattack.<\/p>\n

Vzglyad invited Russian cyber expert Igor Ashmanov to discuss this issue, who explained the \u201cadditive propaganda method<\/em>\u201d allegedly deployed by the Anglo-Saxon states, which involves adding new elements to a previously disseminated lie. In other words, Russia has never attacked anyone and anyone who claims otherwise is engaged in the information war against Russia.<\/p>\n

Russian experts also have no further idea why these statements were made. \u201cUkrainian president Petro Poroshenko has somehow convinced Rex Tillerson to bring up this issue again. They need anything to keep the myth that Russia has invaded Ukraine<\/em>\u201d. Poor innocent Russia!<\/p>\n

Kremlin Watch Reading Suggestion<\/h2>\n

\n

Media Forward \u2013 new project about Moldova\u2019s media sector<\/strong><\/p>\n

This week, we recommend Freedom House\u2019s\u00a0Media Forward<\/a>\u00a0policy brief series, which focuses on critical issues affecting Moldova\u2019s media sector. Given its Soviet past, Moldova has experienced a lot of hostile activity by Russia, which does not like the idea of Moldova\u2019s pro-European orientation. Unfortunately, these activities have been quite successful, mainly due to a range of internal factors, especially regarding the Moldavian media.<\/p>\n

The first<\/a>\u00a0of the two papers published so far deals with the overall problem of insufficient media literacy and the challenge of fake news in Moldova, and tries to answer the question why Russian propaganda and disinformation campaigns are so successful in the country. Besides language (although Russians represent only 4% of Moldova\u2019s population, Russian is the second most spoken language in the country) and the enduring nostalgia for Soviet times, one must not underestimate the importance of the Orthodox church, which is a crucial institution in Moldavia that isn\u2019t afraid of engaging in smear campaigns against pro-European politics. Last but not least, the insufficient media literacy of Moldavian citizens enables (not only) external actors to spread pro-Russian sentiments via situational narratives.
