The breach was supposed to last \u201c<b>for several months\u201d<\/b>. The Czech Foreign Ministry confirmed the breach, but denied classified information was stolen.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<ul class=\"m_-633053962757484091Apple-dash-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/neovlivni.cz\/bleskova-zprava-kdosi-napadl-ucty-ministerstva-zahranici\/\">Neovlivni.cz claims<\/a> that it is &#8220;the biggest (Czech) security scandal of recent years\u201d. They claim that the stolen data also related to the Czech allies, meaning NATO &amp; EU members.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<ul class=\"m_-633053962757484091Apple-dash-list\">\n<li>The breach was confirmed a day before the news on the Foreign Ministry being attached broke out. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.info.cz\/cesko\/exkluzivne-ministerstvo-zahranici-se-stalo-obeti-kybernetickeho-utoku-citliva-data-udajne-neunikla-3952.html\">Czech Defense Minister Martin Stropnick\u00fd talked abou<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.info.cz\/cesko\/exkluzivne-ministerstvo-zahranici-se-stalo-obeti-kybernetickeho-utoku-citliva-data-udajne-neunikla-3952.html\">t<\/a> \u201ca state institution&#8221; being attacked <span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_395736829\"><span class=\"aQJ\">on Monday.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<ul class=\"m_-633053962757484091Apple-dash-list\">\n<li>The Czech Foreign Ministry immediately formed interagency special group which vets which information the hackers got. Czech cyber unit from the National Security Authority is now investigating the case.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<ul class=\"m_-633053962757484091Apple-dash-list\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>Czech Foreign Minister Lubom\u00edr Zaor\u00e1lek said on the <span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_395736830\"><span class=\"aQJ\">Tuesday<\/span><\/span> emergency press conference that:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px; text-align: justify;\">&#8211; Czech Foreign Ministry detected the attack is going on in early January 2017.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px; text-align: justify;\">&#8211; The hackers breached the external mailing system of the Czech MFA, which doesn\u2019t transfer classified files. The internal mailing system of the MFA (which carries classified information) wasn\u2019t breached, the Minister said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px; text-align: justify;\"><b>&#8211; \u201cTens of MFA employees&#8221; were hit, including the MFA leadership, including the Foreign Minister himself.<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px; text-align: justify;\">&#8211; The Ministry didn\u2019t inform the public right away in early January, as Czech security institutions were \u201cstudying the hackers\u201d.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px; text-align: justify;\">&#8211; Czech Foreign Minister said that the attack was \u201cvery sophisticated\u201d and was probably\u00a0<b>\u201ca state-like actor\u201d.<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px; text-align: justify;\">&#8211; Czech Foreign Minister also claimed that the attack was of\u00a0<b>&#8220;similar nature\u201d as the DNC hacks.<\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">On February 1, Czech media outlet Info.cz published leaked extracts from internal report of the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), which is currently processing the cyber-attack on the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px;\">&#8211; 7119 documents were stolen, 48 of them directly from the Foreign Minister Zaor\u00e1lek\u2019s inbox<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px;\">\n&#8211; the attacker \u201cbasically maintained undisturbed access to any of the email accounts of the Ministry\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px;\">\n&#8211; the breach lasted for nearly one year &#8211; 168 accounts\/users were compromised, including the Minister and his Undersecretaries<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px;\">\n&#8211; the holder of the information may, according to the NCSC, gain \u201cstrategic advantage\u201d over the Czech Republic<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px;\">\n&#8211; according to the report, the gained information may also be used for attacks on domestic institutions and foreign partners.
